Secretary of Defense James Mattis had important things on his mind as he flew to India for his first meeting with Prime Minister Modi – a strategic partnership for defense of the region, gains made against the Taliban in Afghanistan, and North Korea’s aggressive nuclear weapons program and its new claims that the U.S. has “declared war” to name just a few.

As Sec. of Defense, Mattis, a retired Marine Corps General, is charged with preventing attacks on America, as well as responding to any that do occur through the deployment of about 1.7 million active duty military personnel.

Mattis is probably lucky if he gets time to actually watch a Sunday football game or catch Monday Night Football, but after making a statement on his goals for his first trip to India and taking questions from the press, Mattis was ready to wrap up the press conference when a reporter strayed from the agreed-upon topics.

The unidentified reporter asked the water cooler question that is on every television screen, radio dial and diner counter: “Do you have anything to say about the NFL being someone who has served in the military?”

The response of the Marine general was quick, concise and no-nonsense – about what you’d expect from someone who dedicated his life to the motto: Semper Fi – always faithful, and earned the nickname “Mad Dog” living by that code.

“I’m the secretary of defense. We defend the country.”

And with that, the press conference came to an abrupt end.

Secretary Mattis had matters of life and death to discuss with world leaders and there was no time for the grown men who get paid millions to play a game and bask in the adoration of their fans.

Do you feel that the press is trying to draw members of the Trump administration into the discussion about professional athletes who refuse to stand for the national anthem? Should members of the cabinet, like Sec. Mattis, be expected to express a public opinion about the protests?
