In a local Kroger grocery store a woman was just trying to get groceries when she heard a man say something surprising that immediately grabbed her attention. When the woman took a closer look she saw what the man was sitting on and knew right away that she needed to take action immediately.

The woman, named Lias Lemming Jackson had just finished up a shopping trip when she was on her way out of the store and spotted the man in question.

The two locked eyes for a brief moment and Lisa smiled back at the man nervously, thinking that the man was alone. Then she heard the man utter four powerful words and she realized instantly what else was there.

It wan't until two hours later that the woman's coincidence of an encounter would take a full impact and change the woman's life forever. Lisa could tell from the look n the man's eyes that he needed something more and she couldn't escape the feeling that she could do something to change the situation.

Lisa quickly turned around and returned to the spot where the man was sitting to ask if the man needed any help. That's when the man came to tears and told her something she never could have expected.

The man spoke to Lisa and explained the heartbreaking situation. "What should I do?" Said the elderly man. "I have colon cancer and I have had a really bad accident, if I get up out of this cart everyone will know."

"The look of his dignity lost left me with a lump in my throat," wrote Lisa in a post on the Love What Matters website. The woman soon learned that the man was a veteran and felt forgotten and lost in the country that he had served, especially in the state that he was in as a result of his colon cancer.

"From that moment on, Kroger staff quickly fetched us wipes, undergarments and discreetly took him to their employer bathroom area where he was given clothes," said Lisa in response to the immediate action of her and the Kroger staff.

What Lisa did next was incredibly moving and selfless. She helped to clean up the veteran and once his confidence was restored he and Lisa walked to the register.

The veteran cried and apologized to the woman and told her about the concern that he had for his wife who was waiting at home alone. The two walked to the register where the man's groceries had already been bagged and paid for and were waiting for him.

"He cried harder. He said he fought in Vietnam and Korean War and loved his country, but up until today he said he thought his country forgot about him," wrote Lisa in her post. "He encouraged me that maybe, after all, humanity still does care about one another."

Lisa was one of the many angels that graces our world every day and what she did that day only proved how God was working through people like us to make this world a better place every day. She showed true compassion and showed that all of our veterans deserve the care and compassion that this woman gave to this man. She made sure to make this man feel like he still matters in this world and so does the incredible sacrifice that he made for our country for so many years of this man's life. Lisa and Kroger's actions should both be remembered and people should strive to show the same compassion to our veterans who deserve the respect they earned for serving our country valiantly.
