The nightmare scenario for any parent is perhaps receiving that dreaded late hour phone call that you’re teenage “child” was involved in an accident, those few simple words can alter a parent's life within seconds and perhaps forever, and those questions of recrimination, and of self-doubt almost immediately engulfs you, as to whether somehow you're at fault. However how can a parent who instills a sense of community within that teenager, a sense of awareness of the world around them, and a spirit of political activism, can be anything but proud of that child?

However that sense of community, that sense of right and wrong does have ramifications within this politically hostile environment, which may be the reason that 17-year old Brian Ogle is now fighting for his life in an Alabama hospital. When he was viciously attacked over the weekend in an in an Ace Hardware parking lot after attending his High School’s homecoming game on Friday night

Sylacauga Police Chief Kelley Johnson received information that someone was lying on the ground in the parking lot, and within a short time police arrived on the scene to discover that the young Brian a Sylacauga High School student was badly beaten and bleeding from a massive head wound.

Brian was immediately airlifted to the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital where tests revealed that he had suffered 3-skull fractures and trauma to his shoulder.
Brandi Allen (Brian’s mom), believes that the vicious assault took place because Brian was in support of the police and posted that on Facebook.

She continued; “Instead of us planning for his 18th birthday, we’re here, why? Because he made a statement that he backs the blue? I’m still trying to understand how someone, no matter the color of their skin, can do this to another human being.”

Allen acknowledged that her son received “threatening messages” after posting his support of the police on Facebook.

“My son took it to the principal at Sylacauga High School and I commend him for that. He showed her the threats that were being made to him, but she told him there was nothing she could do. I’m appalled.”

We all hope that young Brian makes a full and speedy recovery, however it would be a disservice to this young man fighting for his life, if we do not do likewise and speak out, no matter the consequences!

This is clearly a racially motivated hate crime.
