Violence erupted inside an overcrowded Alabama prison on Friday leaving a guard and the warden recovering from non-life threatening stab wounds received as they tried to intervene in a fight between two inmates, and the entire prison remaining on lockdown 24-hours later.

According to Bob Horton, a spokesman for the Alabama Department of Corrections, approximately100 inmates were involved in the riot at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility near the Florida border where nearly 25,000 prisoners are housed in a facility designed to accommodate less than 15,000.

Horton also said charges are pending against those prisoners involved in the original altercation, as well as those identified as participating in the stabbing of Warden Carter Davenport and the correctional officer.

As videos recorded on contraband cellphones were posted of Facebook, the Department sent three “Corrections Emergency Response Teams” (CERT) to secure the prison, including the local police and sheriff’s office, while Alabama State Troopers responded to provide perimeter security.

The images posted on social media revealed fires set inside the prison and included messages making claims of police brutality.

“Attention: We need yall help here at Holman Correction Facility Prison. The police down here beating on and jus treating us any kind way. We down here fighting for are lifes. Please contact the News, Newspaper, Radio station. NCAAP. Help please.”

Family members on the outside also posted news of the riot with one woman asking for prayers for her son, an inmate in Holman, after he had made a collect call to her. “Please pray for my son. A riot, Lord Jesus.”

Another woman posted this: “I know its late. But i need help from my family and friends especially from my Sister and Brothers in Christ. I need Prayers to go up for Holman Prison the inmates the guard everyone down there in that facility. No weapon formed against them shall prosper. Thank You!!!!!!”

Holman Correctional Facility houses Death Row inmates and is the only facility in the state that carries out executions.
