By most anyone’s measure, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

As Paul Ryan pointed out in an interview with Face the Nation, our welfare system is broken. That in and of itself is not news. Certainly those that are trapped in the system and desperately seeking a way out from under the government’s thumb of “assistance.”

Ryan indicates that dumping more money into a broken welfare program reinforces the “poverty trap.” He wants to financially invest in welfare reform, “…not to save money, but to save lives.” He says, rather than the government telling people what’s good for them,  government should go listen to the people and find out what they know they need.

Those not on welfare know that success is not won by being an overbearing and abusive parental figure feeding the fire of self-doubt and hatred of the world around you. Success is won via encouragement and building someone up to believe they can do anything. America is the land of opportunity and rather than withhold that, as the current dictatorial welfare system does, it needs to show a light at the end of the poverty tunnel and not a means of existence, but the resources to escape it. Paul Ryan is absolutely correct.
