It happened near Kobane, Syria. A highly contested area near the Turkish border. The hill isn't much to look at, it has no fortification and doesn't offer much cover, so it's unclear exactly a small band of militants would venture up and linger around a flag for an afternoon. Maybe they were having a picnic? Well whatever it was, it didn't end well. It wasn't long before a U.S. airstrike just about leveled it to the ground, sending jihadists flying.


Kobane has been a hot spot of action in recent months, as militant jihadist and Kurdish forces skirmish alongside American and other foreign military support.
