From 1999 to 2010, America's veterans were killing themselves at the rate of 22 per day -- one every 65 minutes, according to a study released in 2013 by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Fearing the stigma of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), many veterans refused treatment for their mental health issues or fell through the cracks in the VA system to face their inner demons alone.

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday an end to the negligence of past administrations that ignored the plight of veterans who needed quality mental health care before they took their own lives.

"Today, I announced another historic breakthrough for the VA. We are working tirelessly to keep our promises to our GREAT VETERANS!" the president tweeted.

Trump's plan to revamp the VA system regarding the delivery of mental health care is a giant leap forward for at-risk veterans.

Under the president's initiative veterans will now have access from their cell phone or computer to mental health professionals and VA suicide prevention services. VA video connect will enable veterans in rural areas to communicate with doctors from the comfort of their own home.

Trump has shown that he has the capacity -- and the genuine compassion -- to engage America's veterans like no Democratic president before him.

One soldier suicide per day is an unacceptable statistic -- 22 per day is both a tragedy and an epidemic.

Veterans who fought overseas too often find that the war doesn't end when they step off the plane that brings them home. It rages on in their heads, testing their sanity and their ability to survive the endless tortures of memory.

These veterans answered the call to duty. Now, it's time for America to answer their cries for help.

Do you think shortcomings in the VA system of medical care have allowed veterans to suffer in silence for too long? Sound off with your view on this subject in the comment section below. If you are a veteran, please share this article on Twitter and Facebook.
