It seems that the obvious question that should be asked is “why’? Why volunteer to serve your country when apparently you have little respect for your country, your flag or the uniform you wear, and even less respect for those serving with you

And so when Pfc. Tariqka Sheffey posted a picture of herself on her Instagram account hiding in her car to avoid standing at attention during the sounding of “Retreat” at the end of the post duty day.

She knew exactly the response she was about to receive as she posted; “This is me laying back in my car hiding so I don’t have to salute the 1700 flag, KEEP ALL YOUR ‘THATS SO DISRESPECTFUL/HOWRUDE/ETC.’ COMMENTS TO YOURSELF cuz, right now, IDGAFFFF.”

Sounding “Retreat” at the end of the day is a long and honored military custom where military members in uniform face the flag at attention and salute, as the flag is lowered for the evening as both “Retreat” and the national anthem are played.

Predictably, Americans had a lot to say about Sheffey’s attitude and social media was  abuzz with comments: “Any soldier who refuses to salute the flag is in the military for the wrong reason, and should be removed by dishonorable discharge with loss of all benefits,” one typical comment read. “If they won’t salute it, they damn sure won’t fight for it.”
