Did you know that there is a second aspect to our Second Amendment rights?

While many observe that, yes, it is our right to keep and bear arms;

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

The flip-side of that coin is that we were mandated to do so, by none other than President George Washington;

“…a free people should not only be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain independence from any who might attempt to abuse them.”

Our freedom is not free. It comes with the price tag of self-accountability and controlling our government, not vice-versa.

In Texas, Republican and Democrat legislators agree and have respect for the right and the mandate. They have recently expanded their open-carry gun laws that liberated concealed carry permit holders, and have added the “Campus Carry” bill.

Concealed carry permit holders may be armed on college campuses throughout the state, with minor exceptions (private school opt-out, public school lunatic “gun free zones”).

Governor Abbott, in speaking for the entire legislature, said

“We understand that the Constitution matters. Every single word of it and every single component of the Bill of Rights.”

While the Open Carry Bill for Concealed Handgun Holders and the Campus Carry Bill do not take effect until 2016, and should not be necessary given the Second Amendment to begin with, it is a step in the right direction, and perhaps other states will follow their lead and start representing their citizens’ rights and responsibilities according the US Constitution, and not their, the legislator’s, personal wishes and demands.
