SORE LOSERS! Chaos Erupts On House Floor After LGBT Measure Gets Defeated
Just days after the Democrat state convention in Nevada erupted into what the head of event security termed “unruly and unpredictable conditions,” with Bernie Sanders supporters chanting, hurling chairs, and rushing the podium, leaving California Sen. Barbara Boxer in fear for her safety, Democrats on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives followed suit throwing the chamber into chaos during a recorded vote.
The scene occurred as the members voted on an amendment proposed by Rep. Sean Maloney (D-NY) to effectively bar federal contractors from winning government bids unless they fully comply with President Obama’s executive order prohibiting discrimination against LGBT employees.
Democrats sought to strike a provision protecting religious organizations contracting with the government from discrimination based on religion, claiming it would allow such institutions to fire employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
The Maloney amendment had an apparent 217-206 victory as the vote clock expired, but as some Republicans began to switch their votes to ensure the defeat of the measure, boos rang out in the chamber along with a rising chant of “Shame! Shame! Shame!”
House rules allow members to change their minds at any time before the final vote is “called” by the Speaker pro tempore wielding the gavel, but require that they leave their seat and make the change from the front of the chamber, called “the well.”
Democrats charged that Republican members were not complying with the rule, but switching via the electronic voting machine.
Eventually, as the chaotic scene continued, the amendment fell by one vote, 213-212.
“This is one of the ugliest episodes I’ve experienced in my three-plus years as a member of this House,” said Maloney, who is openly gay, said, referring to the votes being switched, rather than the shouting and bedlam on the floor of Congress.
Democrats put forward the amendment to prohibit federal contracts from being let to any company that fails to comply with President Obama’s most recent executive order.
