Engineering education is the latest academic discipline to be attacked by SJWs, the so-called social justice warriors who promote the progressive agenda by attempting to impose their idea of correct standards and rules on everyone else.

And according to Michigan State University Mechanical Engineering professor, Indrek Wichman, the SJWs have infiltrated engineering education.

“They have sought out the soft underbelly of engineering, where phrases such as ‘diversity’ and ‘different perspectives’ and ‘racial gaps’ and ‘unfairness’ and ‘unequal outcomes’ make up the daily vocabulary,” Wichman wrote in an essay for a professional journal.

For those who don’t know exactly what it is engineers do, yet benefit in a hundred ways every day from the work they do – engineers invent things and systems to run them.

Using the principles of hard science and mathematics, engineers develop solutions to technical problems from how to build a skyscraper to how to lay the electrical grid and light and heat the offices, to the computer systems and networks, the elevator that carries employees to it and the bridges and subway systems that handle the daily commutes to it.

From airliners to prosthetic devices, space rockets to DNA computing, engineers study physical properties and solve problems using new ideas – until now.

“Instead of calculating engine horsepower or microchip power/size ratios or aerodynamic lift and drag, the engineering educationists focus on group representation, hurt feelings, and ‘microaggressions’ in the profession,” Professor Wichman wrote noting that engineering schools are increasingly focusing on concepts that are incompatible with the actual discipline.

Touchy-feely phrases like “empowering students” more suitable for “soft” sciences like sociology than engineering are now to become part of the language of engineering professors.

As Wichman points out, “engineers ‘empower’ themselves and, most important, other people, by inventing things.”

Even at the prestigious Purdue University, the SJW agenda has taken hold where the new Dean, Dr. Donna Riley, has plans to revise the curricula.

Riley’s website page notes this will entail “de-centering Western civilization,” and “uncovering contributions of women and other underrepresented groups.”

Wichman bluntly remarks that Riley’s purpose

“seems not to be how best to train new engineers but to let everyone know how bad engineers have been.”

This would mean especially the engineers of the past who have given us roads and bridges, kidney dialysis machines, computers, the systems that heat, light and cool our homes, offices and businesses, hospitals and schools.

Shame on them for not being more socially aware of all those bad microagressions along the way.
