Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein just set the boundaries for the Russia probe that began as a fishing expedition so that it won't become an even bigger fishing expedition.

The Washington Times reported Sunday that Rosenstein gave instructions to Special Counsel Robert Mueller not to stay inside the parameters of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

This means no casting of drag nets or investigatory detours that might lead to new baseless allegations that Trump colluded with the Russian government.

Rosenstein appointed Mueller to the Russia inquiry in May under pressure from congressional Democrats and rogue Republicans. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the matter, leaving Rosenstein in charge.

“Bob Mueller understands and I understand the specific scope of the investigation, and so no, it’s not a fishing expedition,” Rosenstein told host Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday.”

Rosenstein also made it clear that anything that goes beyond the scope of the investigation as set forth by the US Department of Justice would need his approval.

The latest attempt by the DOJ to rein in the Democratic/RINO/Neocon/Neoliberal/Deep State witch hunt, whose ultimate goal is the impeachment and removal of Donald Trump, may or may not be enough to keep the wolves at bay.

Regardless of the ability of the congress to get Trump to do its bidding, as with the president's reluctant signing of a new round of Russia sanctions, his opponents want him gone and they won't stop until he's taken out of the equation.

The Russian perception is that Trump is holding a weak hand in dealing with his enemies and is fighting for his political survival.

They could be right.

However, it's doubtful that the Russia probe will turn up anything of probative value. Th only purpose of the probe is to wear down the president and serve as a constant distraction.

Mueller's hands appear tied for the time being -- at least enough so that the Russia probe doesn't suddenly drift away from the straight and narrow into the crooked and overreaching.
