Republicans Just SLAMMED THE DOOR On Obama’s Attempt To Bring Convicted Terrorists To U.S.
Can it be that the Republican Congress has finally developed a backbone? And although it’s almost 8-years to late, never-the-less welcome aboard, what took you so long?
Perhaps a little of “The Donald” may be finally rubbing off, in that the GOP Congress has just sent Barack Obama an awesome message!
One that will no doubt have the president fuming, in that the message sent Tuesday to the White house is a $607 billion defense bill that bans moving Guantanamo Bay detainees to the mainland, the mainland of course being the United States.
The Senate’s 91-3 vote gave final legislative approval to the measure. The House overwhelmingly passed it last week, 370-58.
Obama who had campaigned on closing Gitmo now finds himself in a precarious position, in that although he could easily veto the bill, the overwhelming votes in both houses in keeping Gitmo open suggests that both chambers may have the numbers, the two-thirds needed to override the president's veto, which of course would be a monumental embarrassment, in light of Obama’s continued promises and a cornerstone of his policy.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest hinted last week that the president might use his executive authority to close the prison.
On Monday, Earnest said the White House is focused on working with Congress to shut down Guantanamo, but he left the door open on the president taking executive action…stay tuned!
