Most likely none of us knows for sure how we might act if faced with a sudden life-altering situation, especially an event like Fort Lauderdale, where seconds could mean the difference between life and death.

Perhaps we at some point after watching the carnage unfold in the comfort of our homes, on our favorite news broadcast, might think for a brief moment of how we might react if confronted by those same events.

It’s that same thought process that young men and woman going off to war or perhaps a police officer beginning his tour of duty might consider, however for a retired Rochester citizen rushing through a Florida airport and anticipating a cruise vacation, those thoughts are as distant as the cold New York weather he left behind.

And yet within a burst of gunfire Tony Bartosiewicz, 70, suddenly found himself within that life and death struggle to survive, and did perhaps for many the unexpected within that horrific moment, to instantly became a hero, rushing to the aid of a terrified woman cowering on the ground and covered her with his own body whispering:  ‘I will protect you!”

This amazing selfless and heroic act was reported in the Florida Sun Sentinel, describing in detail the event.

Annika Dean, a Florida school teacher, was waiting for her luggage when she suddenly heard shots and saw the deranged shooter open fire, and quickly realized there was no place to hide, and instinctively got on the ground, hoping that the madman would not kill her, and that’s when Bartosiewicz laid on top of her and whispered in her ear.

Dean 42, said; “He basically climbed on top of me and whispered, ‘I will protect you,” I knew he might be a victim, but I also knew I would survive.”

She continued: “There was no way I could have escaped, I would have been right in his path if I had tried to evacuate through the doors.”

“The first thing I said to him was I thanked him and told him that it was terrifying and what he did brought me comfort, that it was just so comforting,” she said,  “I thanked him throughout the day and told him he was a hero.”
