Petition To Revoke Tax-Exempt Status For Counsel For American-Islamic Relationship (CAIR)
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service grants tax-exempt status to non-profit organizations operated exclusively for charitable, educational or religious purposes;
Organizations with 501(c)(3) status include: Doctors Without Borders, the American Red Cross, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Boy Scouts of America, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association among others;
All 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations are prohibited from directly or indirectly supporting or opposing any candidate for elective office;
The violation of that prohibition may result in the revocation of the tax-exempt status by the IRS.
Now, whereas CAIR is a 501(c)(3) organization under the U.S. tax code; and
Whereas the executive director of CAIR, Nihad Awad, expressed opposition to a candidate for the presidency of the United States by stating, on behalf of CAIR:
“We ask Mr. Ben Carson to withdraw from the presidential race because he is unfit to lead and because his views are inconsistent with the United States Constitution.”
We respectfully request that the Congressional Committees on Oversight, and the U.S. Department of the Treasury find CAIR in violation of the prohibition against supporting or opposing a candidate for elective office and remove its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
