FOX News anchor Megan Kelly came under fire for her no-holds-barred questioning of billionaire Donald Trump at last week's first Republican debate, and now an online petition effort has been launched demanding that she be benched for any future debates.

Kelly, a former litigator in Chicago and current host of "The Kelly File," one of the top-ranked cable news programs in the country, wasted no time in questioning Trump about  derogatory statements he has made about women in the past.

“You’ve called women you don’t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals,” said Kelly before Trump interrupted with a quick deflection, "Only Rosie O'Donnell," in reference to the on-air sparring between he and O'Donnell in the 80s and 90s. Trump responded to the question by saying that the country faces more important issues.

Although Kelly claimed the question was fair, and pointed to tough questions posed to the other 16 candidates, the uproar caused by the exchange continues nearly a week after the debate.

The petition has reportedly garnered nearly 30,000 signatures that would force FOX News, the sponsor of the Republican debates, to reconsider the popular anchor's role in future debates.

The petition claims that Kelly "tenaciously covered Mr. Trump's past (to the point of voyeuristic obsession) rather than his vision for the future." claims the petition is "a call for truly fair and balanced coverage of all candidates," citing the FOX News claim of unbiased reporting.

The next Republican debate will be held Wednesday, September 16 and aired on CNN; FOX News will not host another until January 2016.
