Two members of an El Salvadoran gang, MS-13, plead guilty to the 2013 murder of a 16-year-old high school student in Houston Texas. The two men, Cristian Alexander Zamora, and Leonel Campos Lara, plead guilty to avoid the death penalty.

In 2013, high school student Josael Guevara was taken to the Sam Houston Federal Forest and partially decapitated with both a baseball bat and a machete. The two gang members thought that Guevara had leaked information about the MS-13 gang to El Salvadoran police and killed him by order of the gang.

According to other reports, Guevara's death is not an isolated incident and there have been other murders and incidents related to the MS-13 gang which has been described as a "constant threat." The gang especially targets small businesses that are owned and run by immigrants where it then charges the owners fees to avoid "bad things" happening to the owners' relatives in Central America.

What's most unnerving about this story, however, is the fact that illegal immigrants are prohibited from carrying firearms, but that machetes and baseball bats aren't regulated at all. It's clear from this devastating murder of a high school student that machetes can be just as deadly as firearms in the hands of hardened, illegal immigrant gangs, and that these gangs need to be stomped out.

Unfortunately, the United States' current immigrant policy doesn't make it easy for immigrant gangs such as MS-13 to be removed from the country--we already struggle to export illegals who have been convicted of crimes, how can we catch and send away those who haven't yet been convicted but are still working for these powerful gangs?

For those who propose an open border, let this sad story serve as an example. Open borders are not the answer if the safety and livelihood of American citizens are on the line. We need to protect our borders from powerful gangs like MS-13, not leave the borders open to them.
