Social media comments are increasingly being used by all sides of the media to point fingers and assign blame. While some might call that ridiculous, the fact of the matter is that social media often shows a person's true feelings, without the professional filter that covers other speech and public discourse.

It's that showing of true feelings that has made an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) employee's Facebook comments so frightening.

Loring Wirbel is a liberal official in Colorado's chapter of the ACLU. Wirbel was pressured to resign recently because of highly derogatory comments he made on Facebook regarding Donald Trump supporters.

Wirbel suggested that Trump supporters should be shot before being allowed to vote for the GOP front-runner. Wirbel also made a harsh comparison of Trump with Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

"We have to really reach out to those who might consider voting for Trump and say, 'This is Goebbels. This is the final solution. If you are voting for him I will have to shoot you before election day,'" said Wirbel's post.

Though Wirbel soon deleted the comments, it was too late for his professional career with the ACLU. For a member of a group that professes to fight for civil liberties and for freedoms to condone and suggest that people should be shot for their political beliefs is outrageous.

Wirbel, of course, claimed that his words were being taken out of context and that he was being attacked by members of the political right. "They are taking that stuff out of context. It's smear politics," he said.

Unfortunately, comments like the ones Wirbel made can do enough smearing of his reputation on their own. They don't need any editorializing or help. They are insensitive and flat-out wrong.

Thank goodness the ACLU accepted this man's resignation. America doesn't need people like him in places of leadership.
