Judge Rules on Fate of Lawsuit Against ‘Muslim Free Zone’ Store Owner
Freedom of speech is a central tenet of American life. Though we often don't think about the immense effects the freedom have on our lives, America still protects them.
Nowhere was that inherent protection more evident than the recent court decision that upheld a Florida gun store owner's right to declare his store a "Muslim Free Zone." The store owner, Andy Hallinan, told the world that he would no longer serve Muslims or anyone else associated with terrorism via a YouTube video soon after attacks in Tennessee against an Army recruiter.
True to form, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, launched a lawsuit targeting Hallinan for religious discrimination. Luckily for him, advocates from the American Freedom Law Center, AFLC, took on CAIR's lawyers and defended Hallinan's decision.
The court's decision, handed down by District Judge Beth Bloom, relied on the simple fact that CAIR could not demonstrate to the court that any of the imminent harm it supposed would take place was happening.
"There are simply no facts grounding the assertion that [CAIR] and/or one of its constituents will be harmed," read the case.
A spokesperson for the AFLC praised the judge for the strong decision and said that "No firearms dealer or gun range owner for that matter should be required to sell weapons to or train anyone that the dealer or owner has reason to believe is a terrorist threat."
Thankfully, free speech and American values have again won out over people working on a paid agenda to attack Americans who stand up for their rights. If CAIR is allowed to continue in its blatant targeting of American ideals and institutions, we may not have our freedoms much longer.
Thankfully Judge Bloom and the district court saw through to the truth. Freedom of speech means just that, freedom. If they take that away from us, what will we have left?
