If anything this latest tragedy coming out of Orlando reads more like a Charles Dickens “Tale of Two Cities” novel and its iconic quote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

The back-story to this senseless massacre by a radical Islamic terrorist proclaiming his allegiance to ISIS is merely what we can see and hear, the obvious visual of innocent people being murdered and the chilling words that follow requires nothing more complex than our senses.

And yet, this senseless act of carnage is more complicated and more intriguing, and perhaps not even a Charles Dickens could have imagined this bizarre tale, where Omar Mateen, the terrorist who walked into a gay nightclub and methodically began his murderous rampage of exterminating innocent people because of their apparent lifestyle, isn’t at all complex in assessing the “why” of it.

What is intriguing is the terrorist's father, a part-time politician, activist, and celebrity named Seddique Mateen, who appears connected to several Democratic power brokers both locally and within the inner circles of Washington, and who is also running for President of Afghanistan.

Intriguing? No doubt!

However what we do know is that Seddique Mateen is from Afghanistan, and he has his own TV Show called the “Durand Jirga Show” which airs in California, featuring both current event issues and in-depth discussions of Middle Eastern politics.

In one recent airing, Seddique Mateen denounced the Pakistani Government while praising the Afghan Taliban saying, “Our brothers in Waziristan, our warrior brothers in (the) Taliban movement and national Afghan Taliban are rising up.”

Then followed that cryptic warning saying; “Inshallah the Durand Line issue will be solved soon.”

Moreover the elder Mateen’s apparent connections to powerful political Washington insiders, working with both Congress and the State Department is perhaps the most intriguing complexity of all, and perhaps begs the question that in light of his son being investigated in both 2013 and then again in 2014 as a possible terrorist threat to our national security, shouldn’t someone within this administration have been more vigilant in perhaps connecting the dots?

No doubt a “Tale of Two Cities!”
