A Democratic is scheduled to appear in a local county court to answer charges on three felony counts – something that, sadly, is not an unusual occurrence today when politicians seem unable or unwilling to adhere to the laws they enact and vow to uphold.

In this case, however, the sheer idiocy of the act is exceeded only by the arrogance of Rep. Cecilia Velasquez, who voted against welfare reforms in February, and now faces charges of unlawful use of food stamps, fraudulent schemes and practices, and theft.

In short, the state lawmaker is charged with defrauding the food stamp program.

The Arizona Department of Economic Security headed up a multi-agency investigation into Velasquez’s acts that was initiated in 2014 after a tip was received.

The investigation found that the lawmaker used nearly $2,000 in food benefits fraudulently between 2013 and 2015.

Juan J. Arcellana, Arizona’s Inspector General, issued a statement, saying, “The indictment of State Representative Velasquez is the culmination of an extensive multi-year investigation. The forthcoming judicial proceedings will ensure due process for the involved parties.”

Velasquez voted against a bill sponsored by Rep. Anthony Kern, in the Arizona House that would have provided stronger anti-fraud tools to the agency administering the food stamp program – and detected her fraudulent use of the benefits sooner.

Kern said the news was “sad,” telling FOX News, “It is appalling that an elected official representing the people of Arizona would steal from the poor, while consistently saying she is trying to help the poor.”

Velasquez will appear in court on July 5 in Maricopa County, Arizona.
