As another example of what the term “America’s Finest,” often applied to law enforcement, means, you need look no further than the Prince George County Police Department in Hyattsville, Maryland. There you will find one of America’s Finest; Corporal Ché Atkinson.

Officer Atkinson went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to meeting the health and welfare needs of a community citizen. That citizen was a  single mother, who, having nowhere else to go after escaping an abusive situation, arrived at the Prince George County Police station. There she sat, with her small daughter, trying to figure out what her next move would be. All the while, cognizant of the fact that the safest base she could be was in the police station.

It was during this period of time that Officer Atkinson noticed the woman and approached her. After learning of her situation, he took it upon himself to search for a relative willing to provide shelter to the woman. One was found and Officer Atkinson assumed he had solved the woman and her child’s immediate needs.

Lo and behold, he arrives at the station the next morning to find the woman and child, still there! Her relative could not come pick her up for another 24 hours. She still had nowhere to go, no money, no food-nothing. Neither she nor her daughter had eaten in days.

Atkinson jumped into action. What he did should serve as a teaching moment for us all. With his own money, he lined up a hotel room for the woman and her daughter, fed them, provided groceries, and secured a child car seat. He deposited them in a safe environment, where the woman could have some privacy with her child, they could rest, and she could begin to logic her way out of a bad situation.

Corporal Ché Atkinson is a fine example of what it means to be a cop and a compassionate human being.
