As Department of Justice officials were getting ready to recommend that charges should not be brought against Hillary Clinton over the use of her private email server, disgraced FBI Director James Comey was quietly plotting his own course of action to protect Clinton, according to a report in The New Yorker.

"As the inquiry neared its end, Comey, who had closely monitored it from the start, requested summaries of more than thirty government prosecutions involving mishandling of classified information. He waded through the records, seeking to understand the cases’ rationale and how they had been resolved. In the end, he agreed with the investigators’ unanimous conclusion: Clinton should not face criminal charges," The New Yorker reported.

At the urging of DOJ officials, President Trump handed Comey his walking papers earlier in the week, sparking an avalanche of criticism from top Democrats and in the media.

According to the report, Comey was very much concerned about making the decision not to pursue charges against Clinton in a way that the public would accept.

"Comey had his own ideas," The New Yorker reported. "Unbeknownst to his Justice Department colleagues, Comey had resolved to proceed alone with the announcement. Since May, he had been holding a parallel series of meetings with top F.B.I. confidants to thrash through his plan. He would publicly announce—and explain—the Clinton decision without Lynch at his side. 'We had discussions for months about what this looked like,' Michael Steinbach, who retired as the F.B.I.’s executive assistant director for national security in February, 2017, said. 'This, for us, was the best course of action, given the political situation that we were in—for us to do it independently.' ”

On July 5, Comey announced that no charges were being brought against Clinton. Four months later -- 11 days before the election -- Comey stunned Democrats with the announcement that he was reopening the investigation -- a move the report says was to protect his credibility.

As Comey was busy burning bridges with Democrats, his working relationship with President Trump was being demolished with the announcement that the FBI was investigating Trump for alleged collusion with the Russians.

It was only a matter of time before Comey was sent packing.

Comey proved himself quite the political animal, concerned mainly about his own survival under enormous pressure from both parties.

The country needs an FBI director whose main concern is for the law rather than saving his own skin.

Please share your comments if it is your belief that James Comey was no longer capable of leadership of the FBI and had to go.
