After an increase in attacks on police officers after a series of questionable deaths, Rep. Lance Harris is pushing for a “Blue Lives Matter” bill that would add to their hate crime prevision. The bill, BILL HB 953 would be changed to include all law enforcement officers and firefighters.

The current hate crime provision says: It shall be unlawful for any person to select the victim of the following offenses against person and property because of actual or perceived race, age, gender, religion, color, creed, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, or ancestry of that person or the owner or occupant of that property or because of actual or perceived membership or service

The “Blue Lives Matter” bill would add “in, or employment with, an organization, or because of actual or perceived employment as a law enforcement officer or firefighter …” to the end of the provision.

Rep. Lance Harris said that police are being attacked more frequently using the example of two New York Police Department (NYPD) cops who were killed in 2014 by a man who posted on social media about avenging the death of Eric Garner, a man whom had been killed by police.

At the end of the bill’s introduction, Rep. Lance Harris said, “We have a pretty extensive hate crime law right now, but I believe we should add firefighters and policemen.”

Currently, the Louisiana hate crime law adds an extra five years in prison for any offense against one of the listed groups in the hate crime law.

Do you think the federal government should pass a similar bill?
