For the second day in a row, protesters with violence rather than free speech in mind hit a Donald Trump rally, prompting the Secret Service to take evasive action to ensure the safety of the candidate.

Agents detoured Trump’s car to the shoulder of a highway, leading him down a grassy slope into a side entrance of the venue where, looking unruffled, the 69-year-old candidate jokingly said he felt like he was “crossing the border.”

Inside the Orange County Fairgrounds the night before, Trump introduced thousands of supporters to families who have lost loved ones at the hands of illegal aliens, inviting a bereaved father to talk about his loss, while a mob of thugs the Los Angeles Times described as “made up of almost all young Latinos” waved Mexican flags and stomped on American ones, jumped up and down on a police car, threw rocks at passing motorists and attacked a police officer and horse.

Another officer escaped serious injury when his helmet deflected a rock and at least one civilian required stitches to a head wound.

Apparently oblivious to the irony of both supporting and suppressing free speech, 19-year-old Daniel Lujan, told a reporter, “I’m protesting because I want equal rights for everybody. I knew this was going to be a riot. He deserves what he gets.”

More than 300 police officers were assigned to handle the anti-Trump riot as the Republican presidential hopeful made a campaign swing in the state prior to what may be the decisive California primary in June.

Trump rallies have seen violence before in New York and most notably in Chicago, when a rally was cancelled due to concerns for the safety of his supporters.

Despite Trump’s attempt to laugh off Friday’s incident, Secret Service agents no doubt are aware that candidates were not provided protection prior to June 1968, when Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was fatally wounded in a crowd moments after giving a speech following his victory in the California primary.
