Another Student With Full Scholarship Boasts of Her Illegal Status
A new trend is booming in the U.S. – high school seniors are taking to the graduation stage to announce their status as illegal immigrants and tell the world how they've overcome their situations and difficulties. It's a headline-making idea, but one that is fraught with danger and potential problems for our country.
The most recent student to come forward and announce their illegal immigrant status was McKinney Boyd High School valedictorian Larissa Martinez. McKinney Boyd high school is located in Texas, where Martinez chose to take to the stage during her valedictorian speech and come out as an illegal immigrant.
"We are here without documentation because the US immigration system is broken and forces many families to live in fear," she told the crowd.
Martinez graduated with a 4.95 GPA and took an overwhelming 17 AP courses during her high school career. She has a full-ride scholarship to ivy-league Yale University, and things couldn't look better for her.
But it's clear from Martinez's speech that she has taken full advantage of her status as an illegal immigrant and is using her scholarly success as a platform.
During her speech she called out Donald Trump's plans for a wall and said that his policy ideas are based on "hate and prejudice."
While Martinez has clearly gained the backing of the media – and she's accomplished a great deal, there is no arguing that – the larger issue is still troubling.
Here is someone who has openly admitted their illegal immigrant status, but law enforcement will do nothing to punish her or make an example of her situation. Because of her success, the laws of our country are being broken openly.
Meanwhile, other immigrants who came to the U.S. through legal channels are seething.
"I did it legally, nobody should get a short cut," tweeted one person.
While Martinez's story is inspiring, it's time to face the truth. If we don't start enforcing the laws of our country, we'll be overrun.
