Police officers are now under fire in New York City, and none of the politicians there will do what needs to be done to protect the brave men and women who wear blue. These shootings have become a plague that is sweeping across the country. When will our leaders step up and condemn these acts of violence and work with communities to prevent these tragedies?

Thankfully, the four New York City Police Department officers who were shot at are all alive and well. The officers were on duty and stationed in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn in New York City.

Suddenly, around 11:00 p.m., a car with "tinted windows" approached the officers at a crawl. The officers, naturally skeptical, were instantly on guard when the four black males inside told the officers that they needed to get inside the vehicle.

Following the command, the men in the car fired on the officers and sped off, later abandoning the car. Police are now searching for any leads regarding the four men, but it's unlikely that they'll be able to find anything.

The NYPD pulled out all the stops to track these men, however, and it's admirable the effort they put into tracking down the men who shot at one of their own. They implemented a K-9 unit as well as a helicopter before they finally located the abandoned car.

Now, if only the politicians in New York and Washington, D.C. would learn from these officers' examples and finally implement policy changes which would help officers, and not make them bigger targets.

The men and women who choose to serve their country by putting a badge on and policing our streets deserve our support and respect every bit as much as do the members of our Armed Forces. It's time that we showed them the real depth of our gratitude by helping them do their jobs.
